Garden Visit: Filoli Historic House and Garden in Woodside, CA

After their deaths, the 654-acre estate was sold to William and Lurline Roth, who continued to expand the gardens. Lurline was a particular fan of camellias – she was crazy for camellias, Salyards says – and a large variety of the shrubs can be found throughout the formal gardens. Near the estate swimming pool stands a Camperdown elm planted decades ago. In the winter, the bare limbs are blanketed with moss, and the hundreds of branches make it appear as if the tree is wearing a fascinator of clouds. In the spring, the tree leafs out in brilliant greens with long, dangling chartreuse seed pods that dance in the breeze. As the days move into summer, the tree offers a welcoming, embracing umbrella of shade; sitting beneath it, time seems to still.

Summer

It’s where flowers are specifically grown to be cut for flower arrangements. The rose bushes were just stumps in February (2022) and were still not blooming in April (2023). In October (2023), the roses were in bloom, but there were not as many as summertime.

A Guide to Filoli Historic House and Garden in California

For those who prefer outdoor concerts to hiking, the 20th annual Jazz at Filoli series begins June 27. On Sunday afternoons through September 26, performers will take to Filoli’s birch- and dogwood-shaded outdoor stage. The Roths, Salyards says, wanted the estate to be a place of horticulture significance, where people could visit and learn about the astounding aspects of nature. Before her death, Lurline ensured that would happen, refusing to sell the estate and instead agreeing to put it in the hands of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Filoli has been open for public tours of both the house and the gardens for almost 50 years.

The Walled Garden also flanks the main pathway and steps through the property. You have beautiful views of grassy steps leading up from a pond in the center. If you walk the trail next to the Rose Garden, it will lead you through a field up to a grassy area with columns. The Garden House is an all-glass l’orangerie, or greenhouse, that unsurprisingly gets beautiful light flooding through it. You can walk through it or hang out at one of the small tables on either side of it next to the brick walls.

In spring and summer they have food trucks in the shady area! They didn’t have any in this area in February, but there were multiple groups of people who brought their own food and drinks for a picnic. The Sunken Garden is a large, rectangle pond situated in front of the clock tower. There are potted flowers lined up along either side and in summer there were clusters of lily pads growing in it. It’s one of the most gorgeous spots on the entire property and can be viewed from either end (but you cannot walk on the grass as it’s roped off). There aren’t as many flowers in fall, but the orchid is open to explore and the roses are still blooming!

It’s peak flower-blooming season, the weather is lovely, and everything just feels right in the world. I’ve visited every season and have experienced all the changes to the gardens and the house each season. After the death of her husband in 1963, Roth lived on alone at Filoli.

You’ve probably heard the word “rambler” used in the context of mid century houses. You may have even heard “rambler” used interchangeably with “ranch.” But what does it mean for a home to be a mid century rambler? Mid Century RamblerA mid century rambler is a one-story home built in the mid century era (usually considered the 1950s and ’60s, with some outliers in the late ’40s and early ’70s). The open floor plans commonly found in rambler houses create spacious and flowing interiors. This design makes it easy to move around and allows for flexibility in furniture arrangement, making the house suitable for people of all ages.

True Built Home is your trusted partner in realizing your dream of owning a rambler-style home. We are experts in creating homes that are aesthetically pleasing but also functional and cost-effective. Rambler houses tend to have broad appeal, which can make them attractive to a wide range of buyers. First of all, you should pay attention to the furniture and include the pieces with wood, leather, and sleek lines. Wood was popular in the 1950s and provided warmth filling the house with unique colors. Besides this, you can also add some vibrant fabrics and large-scale art pieces to the walls.

The most popular rambler home windows are double or single-hung windows. Casement windows were originally installed in rambler homes but later replaced. Those who wish to return to their home’s original casement or awning window style would recreate its authentic look. Rambler homes cost more to build because they require twice as much land due to their single-story layout. A two-story house is cheaper because it requires less land and has a smaller roof. A rambler home needs almost twice as many materials to build and a bigger foundation.

A single story floor plan is ideal for those suffering from physical injuries. Although the floor layout may not be a silver bullet solution, it is more convenient than multiple-story home styles. These houses are still very common today because they have a lot of fine qualities about them. They are more affordable than most other house plans on the market today and have nostalgic value to them as well. Whatever floor plan someone has in mind for their one-story home, the rambler style will most likely be able to accommodate it in some fashion.

Often these houses have garages or storage beneath the rooms like bedrooms, living rooms, or the kitchen. Besides the spacious floors, the rooms of the rambler house are usually large, with a good source of natural light. Ramblers are known for their open interiors that allow for easy movement throughout the home’s horizontal spaces. The spacious layout is often anchored by a central area which creates a feeling a continuity between rooms, a concept that was influenced by modern architecture.

This is the updated version of the classic California ranch-style house. Similar to the California ranch style, the modern style uses materials like wood and stone to blend in with nature. The main difference between these styles is that the modern ranch style lacks Spanish architectural influence.

Rambler House, Definition and Types of the Modern Rambler Style House

It is not uncommon for rambler houses to have beautiful fireplaces. Some of them open on both sides to a room giving it a cozy, homey feel that is hard to get in some other building styles. The difference between a rambler-style home and a bungalow is how the interior spaces, like the dining room and living room, are divided.

While they were first designed in the 1930s, they grew in popularity following World War II, as more families wanted to live in quiet suburban neighborhoods. That means the modern ranch houses include more clean lines and updated interior design. Other common aspects of ranch home plans are an L-shape or a U-shape, large windows, a long and shallowly pitched roofline, a low overall profile, and deep eaves. You will also almost always find, as briefly noted, a decent amount of outdoor living space adjacent to a ranch house that is finished for active use, as in a patio or large front porch.

After initial casting rounds failed to yield the "quintessentially American person" they were looking for, producers widened the net in search of the perfect anti-hero. Laurie, already a well-known British actor in his home country, was mostly unknown in the United States at the time. "See, this is what I want, an American guy," exclaimed unsuspecting director and executive producer Bryan Singer as he watched Laurie's audition tape – a testament to the actor's talent. Laurie would go on to be nominated for six Emmys and win a Golden Globe for his performance.

Diagnosed with terminal Huntington's disease, Thirteen appeared in 81 episodes of "House." She was absent from season seven after divorcing Dr. Chase but returned for two brief cameos. After saying goodbye to Dr. Foreman, Epps starred in "Resurrection" between 2014 and 2015, and "Shooter" between 2016 and 2018. Since then, Edelstein has had roles in "The Good Doctor," "The Kominsky Method," and most recently, "Little Bird." One of TV's most famous antiheroes, House was a genius, yet despised, doctor who was often able to solve medical puzzles nobody else could.

In "House," Jennifer Morrison played a recurring role for its first six seasons as Dr. Allison Cameron. Originally a member of the diagnostics team, Cameron was overwhelmed by the high-stress environment created by House's crazy antics and left to become a senior attending physician in the ER, though would occasionally consult on cases. It was there that she meets Dr. Robert Chase, who she would eventually marry, before divorcing and leaving the series in the sixth season. Odette Annable played the major role of Dr. Jessica Adams in "House" for the last two seasons of the series. Adams first meets House while working as an infirmary doctor in the prison he is being held in.

Lisa Edelstein starred as Dr. Lisa Cuddy.

"I murdered the American accent," Aussie-native Jesse Spencer exclaimed, recalling how Chase was initially intended to be an American doctor. However, after a few discussions with director and executive producer Bryan Singer, Chase eventually evolved from American to British to Australian. Spencer would appear in all eight seasons of House, despite getting fired from House's team in Season 3, and then ultimately taking over House's title as Head of Diagnostics in Season 8. Princeton Plainsboro's dreamy surgeon Dr. Robert Chase won our hearts with his Aussie charm, good looks, and golden hair. One of three original members of House's team, Chase periodically questioned his place as a doctor, as he was ultimately hand-picked after his well-known father, Dr. Chase Sr., made some influential calls to the hospital. In real life, actor Jesse Spencer also came from a family of doctors himself, with his dad, brothers, and sister all in practice.

After hanging up his white coat, Spencer swiftly returned to primetime television, starring in NBC's drama "Chicago Fire" as firefighter Matthew Casey. He'd also appear in crossover episodes for sister-shows "Chicago P.D." and "Chicago Med." This television role would last for nine years; Spencer recently made his exit in 2021, which was met with bittersweet praise and sadness from fans. Spencer's upcoming projects include the Disney+ series "Last Days of the Space Age," where he'll return to his native homeland, as the show is set in 1970s Perth, Australia.

house md cast

Lovable and nerdy, this specialist in sports medicine eased himself into the team alongside the other newcomers. Kal Penn would be a recurring cast member from Season 4 to halfway through Season 5. Hopeful yet cautious immunologist Dr. Cameron was the only woman on House's founding team.

Following "House," Tamblyn would play recurring roles on the CBS sitcom, "Two and a Half Men," and the Comedy Central sketch series, "Inside Amy Schumer." However, Tamblyn is more than just an actress; she's also a director, poet, novelist, essayist, and activist. She co-founded the Time's Up movement, and also wrote a feminist-inspired book of poems, "Dark Sparkler." The real reason Edelstein left "House" was due to conflicts over contract renewals and pay cuts. A real estate higher-up (Adrian LaTourelle) is admitted to the hospital with a severe rash, but it soon becomes clear that he does not live the life that he has led his wife to believe. Meanwhile, House grapples with the fact that his relationship may be distracting him and affecting his ability to diagnose his patients.

She's a woman of many talents, and it seems there's no stop to her never-ending array of impressive and diverse creations. Her most significant career move since "House," however, lies in her transition from actress to director. In 2019, Wilde made her debut as a feature film director of the teen comedy, "Booksmart." The film was a huge success, earning critical acclaim, as well as a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Following that, Wilde extended her directing portfolio to include the 2022 psychological thriller, "Don't Worry Darling." While the film (specifically Wilde's involvement in it) was surrounded by a great deal of controversy, it's still a directorial feat and a notable achievement for her career. Hugh Laurie stole the show as Dr. Gregory House, the cynical yet brilliant man everyone loved to hate, and hated to love.

The embarkation and disembarkation of passengers is streamlined. In 2013, the port Tampa was ranked USA's 16th largest (by domestic trade tonnage), 32nd largest (by foreign cargo tonnage) and 22nd (total shipping tonnage). Port's impact on Florida's economy is over USD 15 billion, with supported over 80,000 local jobs. Most handled vessels are bulk carriers and tankers, also Ro-Ro ships (car carries) and boxships (container carriers). Carnival ships here have passenger capacity between 1000 and 2600, and generally operate on Western Caribbean roundtrip itineraries. Port's strategy is not homeporting mega-ships, but rather attracting smaller and recently refurbished vessels with itineraries to easy-to-reach destinations.

The nearest highway is Lee Roy Selmon Expressway (running along the port's northern border). Simply visit the port’s webpage on Tampa cruise parking, select the cruise line you’re sailing on, select the date of your departure and you will have 3 options. You can choose self-parking, valet parking, or oversized vehicles parking.

Set sail from the convenient port of Tampa Bay in Florida and travel to some of the most coveted destinations in the Caribbean and Central America.

Public Transportation

Taxicabs leaving the Tampa airport have a set rate of $35 from the airport to the cruise port. Given that several people can ride for this amount, taxis are a reasonably convenient way to get to your cruise. You’ll likely find that Uber/Lyft also offer cheaper fares than taxis and potentially better service than most taxis. For example, Lyft estimates a ride from the Tampa airport to the cruise port would run $25-30. Considering taxis charge a $35 flat fee from the airport to the cruise port, rideshare services are a cheaper deal. Because of it’s close proximity to the airport, cruise passengers are able to spend more time sightseeing, shopping and enjoying all the things the city of Tampa has to offer.
